CommentsI'm trying to find an online support group. My mom had a stroke and brain aneurism 2 wks. ago and is in a coma, etc. I live 5 hrs. away and can't be at the hospital consistently. I have to depend on the nurse on duty for info. They're not always open with me. Any suggestions?
CommentsConsider changing the note and memory device to something like the following: *** Ask the STARS *** When someone has a stroke, they can easily suffer severe brain damage if people nearby fail to recognize what has happened. If someone falls unexpectedly or has another odd symptom, people can recognize if they have potentially experienced a stroke by asking the "STARS” – ask the person to: S * SMILE T * TALK A * AH – say ‘ah’ and stick out your tongue R * RAISE both arms, and then S * SPEAK a simple sentence (e.g., “It is sunny today.”) If she or he has trouble with ANY of these tasks or if the tongue is goes to one side or the other instead of out straight, call 911 (if in the USA and 999 in many other countries) immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. If everyone who gets this note sends it to 10 people, hundreds of lives can be saved and the quality of life for the person who experiences a stroke will be much better as well.
CommentsI would like to help spread the word in this country that acupuncture is a very effective treatment for stroke rehabilitation. It is used extensively in the Orient and there are many scientific studies documenting it's effectiveness. Many people I see with CVA come as the last resort. The sooner acupuncture is given the more rapid the recovery. Maybe some day it will be done right in the emergency room. I would like to help more people recover from paralysis, it is so rewarding.

CommentsI'm not sure I should even be here. My mother now resides in a nursing home after a second stroke, with 15 years between. The second came with little warning, and under medication. She now communicates a lot, but also has aphisia, so is confusing. Her right side is weak, so she seldom walks, even with assistance. I assumed power of attorney, and have sold the family home of 50 years, and most of the antique furniture, as I live in a small apartment, and need liquid assets to pay the care/medication costs. I am frequently depressed by my failure to preserve the family heritage, or to do more to improve the quality of my mother's life. I visit 3-4 hours each weekday, and have no brothers or sisters willing to help. I know there are those with far worse problems, so hesitate to complain, but somehow I feel I should be doing more. I am not sure I should register here, as my family has always solved their own problems. Still, I need to relate to someone who understands.

CommentsI am the only child of stroke victims, my dad in 2002 & now my mom on 07/31. Both had hemorrhagic strokes. Dad (age 79)has recovered fairly well, left w/aphasia, has trouble keeping his balance & tires very easily. Mom (age 73) is currently in rehab, paralyzed on rt. side, cannot swallow (has a peg tube)& is incontinent. Thankfully, she is just starting to speak a few understandable words now. I am obviously doing the best I can to help them both w/o wearing myself down. Browsing this site has assured me that I'm not alone!
CommentsMy mom suffered a stroke in April 2003, left side paralyzed, but through faith in the Lord, lots of therapy and exercise. She is living by herself and taking care of herself. Wears AFO brace, walks with a cane, exercises her hand and arm constantly, she wants use of it to come back so badly., but, yet is thankful she is as good as she is. Was 73 when had stroke, walking 3-4 miles a day, just collapsed in grocery store shopping. She is always keeping busy around her house, but I would like to get her into the computer and this site. Tons of information and helpful advice. Thank you

CommentsI am 53 yrs. old and had a stroke in march 2004. I am currently home on longterm disability and awaiting social security disability approval. I was a special education teache in an elementary school and am no longer able to function in a crowded, noisy environment. I miss the children and contcact with others. Spend most of my time alone. I am able to drive a wee bit and sleep alot. I would love to have a survivor to correspond with as I don't belive anyone else can fully understand what we hav experienced.
CommentsMy 63 year old husband had a massive stroke in May 2006 - had 100% blockage on his right carotid artery and his other 3 arteries have blockage too. He's home now and walking with a cane, but the left side of EACH eye he can't see - this is so scary for him (and me). Also, he has an urgency issue with urination and starts "spilling" before he gets to the toilet. I wonder if that will get better or does it have to do with any of the 6 medications he's taking? I see Plavix on one site said urinary issues was one side effect in studies. They wouldn't unblock his arteries in hospital cuz too risky and damage already done. However, I hope they can unblock them soon. I'm so afraid of another stroke occurring and he's all I have (no kids, only a dog). Thanks.
CommentsI've been a caregiver now for over a year. I am 20 years older than the person for whom I'm caring and I'm interested in a strategy to prepare her for my demise.

CommentsMy father suffered a stroke on 7/31. He is 73 and is in excellent physical and mental shape. I am shocked at the way a stroke affects a person. He is just waking up a bit more and there are times when his old self seems to be there, but there have been times that he seems to be in his own world and almost childlike. I am frightened.
CommentsWould leke yo chat with dthers who have had a stroke.Only understand. Most people do not want to hear about it.
CommentsMy father (age 79) had a stroke 7/9/05. As of 8/1/05 his left side is flacid. He has difficulty swallowing. He has had pneumonia twice since the stroke. He is still in the hospital. Much of the day he is very lethargic and even when "fully" awake speaks in sentences of 3 or 4 words.

CommentsA stroke can take on many different features, both phyiscally and emotiolly without even batting an eye. My father has a massive stroke a few months before my mother was taken from us for severe colon cancer. The best part is that I do have my father here and he's worked so hard to get back to where he was; however, he's still not my little daddy. Then, to top of of this off, my husband and I had tried for 12 years to have a grandchild for them........3 monts after Mom died, 9 months after dad has his stroke, we were blessed with our little joyful girl. She's named after our mothers (we lost both of them at a young age) ( Carlie Jane ) And I know the angels shine down on her at all times. Was it difficult helping my mom in her last few months? Was it disgrading to her and I was responsible to make her feel comfortable, yes. But I just thank God EveryDay that I was able to do what I could do to make her last few moments peaceful. With my dad....he shines, just shines....when he sees Carlie Jane. He'll now hold her if someone is around and he interacts with her. So even though I've lost a lot of what I had with my father, I have also gained a whole new part of me to share. I guess that's enough rambling for me, but just know your parents and your children someones can get on your nerves, but be patient....be understanding....for they are ALL this world has. God Bless You All!

CommentsI'm not sure who sentths newsletter to my nbox but I'm sure glad you did. Thank you! I had my stroke ( a middle cerebral embolism,) five feeks after the birth of my first child. I was only 34 and it has changed my life forever. I am now left with a limp, cognitive dificulties galore, and a a left arm that doesn't work and most likely never will. But I have a lovely four year old daughter that needs me and I can't give in to depression or sit around feeling sorry for myself so I have to trudge along and make the most of what I'm left with, right??
CommentsWOW! I just finished my first visit to your site and all I can say is, "AWESOME." Your site is extremely well designed and organized. Your have to be proud of what you have accomplished and excited about what lies ahead. I hope our organization can do half as well as you have done. We'll be traveling in your wake. CommentsIt's now over three years since my life-changing experience happened. As a web addict I'm surprised it's taken me this long to find my 'home'. A place to share my feelings with other survivors, to see how others are coping. I'll certainly come home often from now.

CommentsI am a stroke survivor of about 2 years. I couldn't walk or talk/read or write. thanks to therapy of all kind,a lot of determination and the grace of God, I am doing all of these things again. The stroke left me with many other problems, including neuropathy. I'd like to know how others deal with the pain. Also, if anyone would like to contact me, I will answer.
CommentsI am the message board administrator here at Strokenet. I'd like to encourage you all to take part in our board by registering and becoming a member. No one understands the problems of stroke survivors and caregivers like others who have walked the same path. We give each other lots of support and it's a great place to make cyber-friends who will understand what you are going through. Jean

CommentsMy Mother suffered a stroke on Christmas Eve morning. She is 90 years old and has no major medical problems/ For 30 years she has only taken a coated aspirin and vitamin E. Her MRI showed that a small blood vessel burst. She is in rehab getting P/T, O/T and S/T. She is making some progressed and some of the stroke has reversed, drawing of the face and her swallowing is now normal. If her medicare runs out and she still needs therapy I am going to quit my job and bring her home. I need to know how to take care of her at home.
CommentsMy dad had a hemorraghic stroke in August. He also had mild dementia. Now, the dementia is really bad. We don't know if some of the medicine he is taking is causing this or if it is from the stoke.
CommentsMy husband suffered a severe stroke on 01/06/05. He is 55 years old and had no previous health problems.
CommentsI had a hemoragic stroke 10/18/04. They have no idea what caused it. I am 55, healthy, no family history. I had no symptoms other than numbness & have no recurring effects. I know I am extremely lucky...but I am also extremely scared. I feel like I have been robbed of my innocence. I always thought I would live to be at least 88 (every one in my family has) but now I feel extremely fragile. I feel like no one understands my fears.
CommentsHi, I had an rightischemic stroke at age 27, hemiparalsis with some movement back in arm, but all in leg, would love to chat with other young stroke survivors. My stroke was on 10-21-03. In my past pre-stroke life I was a public school teacher of 6 years. After a lot of reality checks, I am enjoying my time being a stay at home volunteering survivor. Good luck to all of those out there beginning the long hard, but worthwhile road to recovery!
CommentsI survived a stroke at 46 in april of 2003. They tell me I'm lucky to be here. For the first year & a half I had very limited use of left leg & no use of left arm. The biggest problem I've had is slowing down. How do you go from traveling around the country one day,To barely being able to move the next. Post stroke sucks! I haven't giveup though. This summer I tryed to do everything I used to do. I now know my limitations. It's amazing what you can do with one hand,It just takes more thought & patients,Something I dont have much of anymore. My father said he wishes he could have retired at 46 that can't be all bad,Not what I had in mind though. So try anything you think you can do as long as it's safe. You may have taken a time out, but the game isn't over yet.Good Luck & God Bless! Emails welcomed & Anwsered.

Its hard for everyone in my family especially my dad . They both have just turned 50 and he is her primary caregiver. He is depressed and refuses to leave the house to do things for himself such as golf his favorite thing. He feels as though its wrong to live his life . Anyone have advice all he does is work and take care of her. He has alot of people willing and wanting to sit with my mom so he can do things but he refuses. Would liek to recieve emails from other stroke caregivers and victims.

CommentsI am 34 yearold woman, mom and wife who suffered stroke in feburary 2004 after deliverung baby girl prematurely. The cause of my stroke was blamed on PFO, hole in heart which I might had since childhood, which never caused any problem till 34 year, I have 1 7 year old boy, during my first pregnancy everything went fine apart from the fact that I had c-section. During second pregnancy things started going haywire in feb, in he routine checkup it turn out to be that I eas dilated so have to go in ER at 24 weeks, more tests revealed I had infection in my amniotic fluid, so have to deliver the baby at 24 weeks, baby was delivered on feb 6, just 560gm, unfortunately baby died on feb 7, an I decided to go back home instead of staying one more day in hospital and come feb 8 2004 and I had massive stroke which lef me paralyzed on my left side, reached ER again within 1/2 hour, and being aware of tpa asking drs to give tpa, but doctors refused to give tpa based on their own reasons, and now after 9 months of recovery I m still fighting with bouts of depresion, and frustration,if I m forced to look at the bright side of stroke then there are some positive things that I m mobile, right now working around with 1 hand, found great love of my life after 13 years of marriage, and luckily the person is my husband :) luckily while surfing web, being software engineer, I found this excellent site where I could meet people like me who are figting against it more bravely than I m. I am trying to find purpose in my life right now

CommentsDoes anyone know about chronic pain from a stroke? Every nerve ending on the left side of my body feels like it is on fire within 4-5 hours after I take my two pain pills, which are oxycontin and hydrocodone. I wake up in pain after 4 hours. It is like being 10 stories up and 1/2 of me is in the burning building and the other side is outside. If I don’t get enough pain relief, I will have to let go. The longer the time goes, the worse the pain gets. The one doctor thought having a device implanted in my brain, near the stroke site, might work but it is not FDA approved so I would have to pay out of pocket. Does anyone have any info or know anyone with similar problems? Thanks Jerry

CommentsAs a SURVIVOR I take GREAT comfort in knowing that someone out there in this wide world empathizes with what I have both lost and gained.
CommentsMy husband had an ischemic stroke in 3 areas of the brain June 2004, he was 46 at the time. He is very depressed and feels useless and worthless. He has a lot of pain in his left shoulder and multiple complaints, mostly on the left side. He has a 100% occluded cerebral artery with no plans for surgery due to projected poor prognosis if surgery is attempted. I am his full time caregiver and his condition has taken control of our lives. I spend my days taking him back and forth to multiple doctor visits, the ER, outpatient physical therapy, counseling, transactioning all of his business, etc, etc. My job plans are on hold for now....Our lives are so changed! The future is so uncertain. Some days I just want to quit. I feel so worn down. We're both on antidepressants. There is so little help out there. But I try to keep motivated. I face each day hoping it will get better. It is so hard having to do so much. I just registered to this site. It has helped just knowing it is here.

CommentsThanks for offering this site to individuals that have been through this same crisis. It helps to read and see how other people deal with life tragedies.
CommentsMy Brother had a stroke and was paralized first on the right side then a couple of days later he became paralized on the left side. The Doctors are calling it a Stem Cell Stroke. I have never heard of a Stem Cell Stroke, but I would like to learn about it. I am very heartbroken and have no one to talk to. Can anyone help me?

CommentsI suffered a hemorraghic stroke on Halloween 2001. It was very scary for my friends and family(pun intended). I was given coils to "plug-up" the bleeding and everything is fine now and back to work asa anurse. Physically recovered but emotionally shaken. Don't remember my stay in ICU and part of rehab. Write if you want to talk. Another great site for stroke survivors(not victims) is:Smilin' Stroke Survivors Society (SSSS). They aaer very supportive and fun. Carol

CommentsMy husband, Joe had a hemmoragic stroke March 4, 2003. He was paralized on the right side with mild aphasia. He is now about 95% recovered. We are so very lucky. He has persevered at the gym 3 days every week, and walks at least 4 days a week. Sometimes he is "spacey", and his side is very "Heavy". Our message is to never give up.....you improve each day.....keep trying, always. Although or lives have changed forever, We thank God every day and ask Him for the continued determination to continue.

CommentsIn May of 2003 I suffered a stroke. I now have a lot of pain on the left side of my body. The pain is the nerve endings. My brain thinks that every thing that touches me on the left is pain. Cold water actual feels hot and even the wind hurts on the left side. I am looking for other people that might be going through the same problems. Thanks Jerry
CommentsMy husband suffered a stroke 3 days before Christmas 2003 followed a few weeks later by a pulmonary embollism followed a few more weeks later by hallucinations and pneumonia. He's had to start over with rehab 3 times. He is beginning to walk again between parelle bars with assistance. I am his major caregiver and continue to work full time as well. I am hoping to find support for both of us but to be honest I am truly the one who needs it ~ I seem to be falling into depression ~ his attitude is pretty darn good for all he's been through. I am 50; he is 55. We've been together for four years. My daugher and her boyfriend help with his care 2 days a week so I can work in my office ~ the other 3 days I work from home and care for him at the same time. I'm tired...... I would love to hear how other cope with this situation without going insane. It would be a short trip for me.....! :-) :-) No, I haven't lost my sense of humor ~ just my mind. I'd sure like to find it...have you seen it????

CommentsA great site! I had two "Deep Brain Bleeds" in 2002, after surgery, It left me with numbness on the right side and some weakness. Also have problems with numbers and transposing them. Pain seems to come and go and the numbness gets worse at times. Anyone have the same problems I have?

CommentsMy 55 year old husband suffered a hemmorhagic bleed 11 days ago and I am lost and terrified. I don't know whether I'm coming or going. It's very hard to take one day at a time when you're not exactly sure what day it is. He's already been in rehab for a week and they say say he's making excellent progress but everything has been dumped in my lap and I don't seem to be able to absorb what's going on or where it's leading. How do we survive-how do I work when he comes home- how do we pay for our son's college without me working now. My husband has been my best friend and closest confidante for 32 years and I feel lost. Someone please tell me it gets better

I was paralysed down my left side and have been left with severe dystonia in my hand and arm, I recently have been involved in Botulinum Toxin injections to reduce the muscle spasms and wondered if there are others out there with similar experiences? CommentsMy dad had his first stroke in 1995. I was 15 at the time and it was one of the worst days of my life. He's since had several more major strokes and passed away late last year from a bleeding stroke on the brainstem. It wasn't an easy time for any of us, but my dad never once complained. If anything, he was the one who kept us going and positive. I would like to talk to others like me who are going through the same things as I did. I just remember feeling so alone at the time and I wish I'd have heard about this site a long time ago to have someone to share my feelings with. And on a brighter note...because of what "we" went through with my dad I am now a nurse today.

CommentsIs there someone I can talk to who has had bypass surgery? I had my first stroke on 11/27/2003, 48 years old, and have had 4 TIAs since then. I feel like the lucky one as I only have a numb hand off and on at this time. I'm having bypass surgery on June 10, 2004 as I am occluded (blocked) 100% in the left carotided artery and 30% on the right and yes, I'm scared to death but this surgery is supposed to stop future strokes. The surgery consists of taking a vein from my leg, placing it below the 100% carotided artery, fishing it through the side of my face and drilling through the side of the skull above the ear and into the brain and then opening the frontal part of my scalp where the forehead meets the hairline, cutting a half moon shape incision to my ear, pulling the scalp forward toward my face and then into the brain and placing the artery there along with a metal plate and screws so I have blood running to that part of my brain. Right now the 30% carotided blocked artery is supplying blood to the left side that is 100% blocked. I will be in intensive care of course. I hope this is a success and yes there are some dangers but I'm willing to try. If anyone knows of anybody that has had this surgery, please contact me at my email address...Bee697@hotmail.com I will keep everyone posted and if you'd like to chat please do contact me. Yours, Sue
CommentsIs there a site where I can read or talk to someone about bypass surgery from the neck into the brain? I'm not sure what the name of the surgery is called...my surgery is scheduled for June 10th. Please help.

She has developed dementia, which continues to get worse, does not eat and drinks very little, will not participate in therapy, hand has frozen and muscles are in atrophe. She also has atrial fibrulation problem and has severe austeoperosis and many fractures in the spinal region. I am afraid we are loosing her and don't know how to deal with all this stress.
