I am a registered nurse working in a small hospital on the Isle of Skye(north west coast of scotland-u.k)I am helping to set up a stroke rehabilitation unit in my hospital as our nearest general hospital is 150miles away on the mainland. As you can imagine this is a terrible journey to make following a stroke I am looking for stroke survivors to if possible tell me of their own experiences and for any helpful hints they could supply. CommentsMy mother had a stroke on 07/14/02. My father noticed around 9am that her face looked a little drawn and speech was a little slurred. Then around 12noon my daughter said that my mom had mentioned her left arm felt weak. Mom did not want to go to the hospital. When I got to their house around 4:30pm, and I noticed her face, I told my dad we needed to get her to the hospital. I knew then that she had had a stroke, but I could not tell my dad. My aunt was worried because dad did not take her to the hospital when he first noticed it, but mom kept telling him that she did not want to go. I knew nothing about the situation until I picked up my kids. I want to know everything I can so I can help my parents through this. I also have a fifteen year old son and twelve year old daughter, and I want to be able to explain what is happening with their grandmother and what she is going to be going through in the days and weeks to come. She is partially paralyzed on her left side, and she is diabetic and has high blood pressure. Any information will be greatly appreciated. thank you.

CommentsI am an activity aide for Alzheimer's residents, BUT my husband recently had a brain stem stroke & I find myself on the other side of the coin. He is in a nursing home not of my choosing which I am not happy with. I see him every day after work for a few hours. He always asks me to take him home. Said I brought him there to die. It is tearing me apart. Every day is seems there is another problem, UTI's (about 7 or 8 since March, bacterial pneumonia, some confusion, very demanding of me, and rude to staff when his needs are not met IMMEDIATELY. I come home every evening stressed out and am having difficulty sleeping. My husband is on a long list of medications (including 40 mg. of Paxil). He is also a diabetic, has CHF,COPD, pacemaker, Sick SinusSyndrom and had a left side stroke May, 2001. What else can I say!
CommentsI AM THE WIFE AND CAREGIVER OF A 56 YEAR OLD MAN WHO IN MARCH HAD STARTED OUT IN THE HOSPITAL WITH PANCREATITUS. AFTER TEN DAYS HE WAS RELEASED. TWO DAYS LATER HE SUFFERED A MASSIVE STROKE WHILE AT HOME. TWO DAYS LATER WHILE IN INTENSIVE CARE HE SUFFERED A HEART ATTACK AND THEN HE DEVELOPED A URINARY TRACK INFECTION AND ALSO DEVELOPED A CASE OF THE SHINGLES. HE HAS HEALED WELL PHYSICALLY BUT HE IS NOT PROGRESSING MENTALY AND HE HAS DECIDED HE LIKES WHERE HE IS AT AND SAID HE DOESN'T WANT TO GET BETTER. I AM AT MY WITS END AND HAVE NO ONE TO TURN TO. I NEED HELP ! CAROL
